山口実況中継を勉強しています。比較のところで、

A philosopher says that man thinks of nothing less than of death.

これで、自分はnothingをnoと考えて、no less than で～と同じくらい多いみたいな感じで捉え、「人間は死を考えることが多いと哲学者は言っている」と訳したのですが、答えは逆でした。否定＋比較級＋than～の比較級のところを最上級で考えてみると
意味がとりやすいとのことでしたが、

Nothing less than an attack was expected.

こちらの答えは、「まさに攻撃が予測された」となっていたのですが、何故こちらは上と同じような文構造なのに、何故、no less than というふうにとらえるのでしょうか？

あと、上の例文と対照させるために、Nothing was less expected than an attack.という文章があり、こちらは、「攻撃ほど予期されないものはなかった」となっています。

の場合，nothing less than というかたまりでは考えることはできません。

　think of nothing と think of death の程度を比較して，(think of nothing) less than (think of death)「死のことを考えること」よりも少なく「そのことを考えるようなものは何もない」となります。

　このように，less は，think of ～という動詞部分にかかる副詞（little の比較級）です。

　nothing less than ～で，「まさしく～にほかならない，～も同然だ」のような意味になるのは，than の後に nothing という名詞的なものと同等となる名詞がきます。
　nothing less than ～は，less than ～が nothing にかかることになり，
Nothing less than an attack was expected.
であれば，was attacked という動詞部分にはかかりません。
Nothing was less expected than an attack.
の場合は，less は was expected にかかることになります。

この文を “A philosopher says that man doesn't think of nothing more than of death.”と言い換えたら分かりやすいかと思います。

これはスピノザの言葉で、後半部分は「死についてあれこれ考えるよりもどう生きるかについて思いをめぐらせるのが分別というものである」という意味でしょう。

さて、この課題の文ですが、このスピノザを下敷きにしていると推測でします。ここまで来ると大分分かりやすくなったのではないでしょうか。もう少し説明を加えます。
of nothing less than of deathはこう分けて考えは如何でしょう。
thinks of nothing
less than
(thinks) of death
「死について考えるよりももっと少ないのはnothingについて考えること」、つまり、「死について考えるより少なく考えることはない」、すなわち、「死についてはほとんど考えない」となると思います。


これは余分なことですが、Nothing less than an attack was expectedという文があったので付け加えます。言いたいことは英語の表現を理解するのもなかなか難しいということです。
nothing less than
(1) ちょうど…だけ, 少なくとも…以上
We expected nothing less than (＝the same thing as) an attack.
少なくとも攻撃ぐらいのことは予期していた
・・・
(3) 《まれ》 全然…しない
We expected nothing less than (＝anything rather than) an attack.
攻撃ほど予期しないものはなかった, よもや攻撃があるとは思わなかった
