裁判所は、その判決の根拠をtransformative use doctorineに置いている。

(which was) fashioned by the Supreme Court twelve years earlier to weigh the fair use claim made for a parody of a　popular songs,
（transformative use doctorineとは）流行歌のパロディについてのフェア・ユースの主張を考量するために最高裁が（当該判決の）12年前に打ち出したものだった。

even though, unlike that parody, defendant’s reproduction did no more to “transform” the copyrighted images than to reduce their scale to fit the format of its coffee table book.
もっとも、そのときのパロディとは異なり、被告の複製は、単に卓上用大型豪華本のフォーマットにフィットするようにサイズを縮小しただけで、著作権対象の画像を「変換」してはいなかったけれども。

詳しい背景や細かい法的ニュアンスの違いは専門ではないので間違っていたらすみませんが、英語としては、

「裁判所の判決は12年前の最高裁によって、有名曲に対するパロディーの公平な使用の主張の評価において示された（形成された）"改変的使用の原則"（transformative use doctorine)に落ち着いたが、その楽曲のパロディーとは異なり、被告による複製はコーヒーテーブルブックのサイズにフィットするように著作物のイメージを縮小させるように”改変”させる以上のものではなかった。」

といったニュアンスだと思います。
