I had already pretty much promised Jerry that I would book the
guy for my show, so now it was just a matter of getting to know him
and hearing the record, it was called “Your Song,” and I immediately
loved it, so much so that I later recorded it myself. After talking to
him and having him sing for us, there was no doubt in anyone's mind
that Jerry was absolutely right. We had just met a very special artist
with a unique talent: Elton John. We recorded the show with Elton
as guest star. It sat in the can for a couple of weeks, and by the time it
went on the air, “Your Song” was already a hit. It broke very quickly,
and as it turned out, it was a coup for us to be the first to showcase
this new singer.

in the can　は映画業界が使い始めた用語で、撮影が終わり完成したフィルムを公開まで丸い容器（can)に入れておいたことから、映画業界に限らず『完成した後、公開するのを待つ』という意味で使われているようです。

It sat in the can for a couple of weeks　→　『それは完成してから公開まで2週間待った』
