Walter Paterの文献を読んだことがないので何とも言えませんが、Walter Paterは19世紀の批評家みたいですね。19世紀と言えば、質問者さんもご存知の通り、modernity（modern 近代）ですよね。文学はリアリズム（写実主義）-プレ-ロマン主義の反動で起こった芸術/文学理論の台頭、そしてリアリズムを批評するロマン主義などがあげられます(modernism/モダニズム)。（詳しく書くととんでもないことになるので、このへんで）。

彼の文章を見ると、彼はロマン主義者で、リアリズム、またマテリアリズムを批評しているような感じがしますが。彼はidealistみたいですね。”towards the human spirit is to rouse, to startle it to a life of sharp and eager observation. . . . The poetic passion, the desire of beauty, the love of art for its own sake”という文かららそんな感じがしますが。
