This tribute to some special skill in reading for which he was giving me credit failed to conceal from me that he was unable to read himself, and probably all the better able for that to do his own thinking.

結果文字が読めないのは見抜かれてしまうのですが、and probably all the better ableの一文の意味が解りません。

「彼は、その（字が読めない）分、より一層自分で考える能力があるようだ」

He was able to do his own thinking.
彼は、自分で考えることができる。

probably all the better ... for that
おそらく、そのために（字が読めないために）なおさら

He was probably: 彼はたぶん
all the better able: 完璧に出来た
for that： 隠すことを
to do his own thinking： 自分の考えを読むことで
or
for that：　読むことが
to do his own thinking：　自分の考えを述べることで

thatをconcealingにするかreadingにするかはわかりませ～ん。
