様々な階級の人々を、社会における風采を基準に吟味することから始めてみよう。

May we not say ... that they are at the stage of yugen?
私達は、彼らが幽玄の舞台にいると言うことができないだろうか？

文章の構造はたぶん

say ~ of
…について～と言う

ofの後は通常、名詞か名詞句が続く。この場合は、句の代わりに節が続くだけ。

May we not say the courtiers of that they are　at stage of yugen
廷臣（懐刀）が幽玄になる局面について、懐刀と言う。

「廷臣が幽玄になる局面で、懐刀と言うのではないのであろうか?」

この文のcourtiersを関係代名詞で修飾する文が長すぎるために "say ~ of .."の構文解釈が解り難くなるために倒置をした文章となる。


「廷臣が幽玄となる局面で、振舞いが立派で風采が他の者をはるかに凌いでいる懐刀を云うのではない（云う訳ではない）のかしら?」
