訳および文法構造について教えてください（ある程度自分で解釈しているのですが）

There are few circumstances among those which make up the present condition of
human knowledge, more unlike what might have been expected, or more significant
of the backward state in which speculation on the most important subjects still lingers,
than the little progress which has been made in the decision of the controversy
respecting the criterion of right and wrong.
自分なりにはこう解釈しているのですが
　こういう状況はほとんどない。（現在の人間の知識の状態を示すもののなかで）
　どういう状況かというと　　
　善悪の基準の論争にけっちゃくをつけることにおいての進展がまるでないという状況ほど
　思ったこととちがう（意外なこと）、あるいはもっとも重要な問題についての思考がまだ停滞しているという遅れた状態にあるということを暗示じている状況はない。
うーんちょとわかりにくいんですが、
　① ,more　significant～　,or　more　significant　とういのは同格でしょうか？
　　あとｶﾝﾏはいらないような気がするのですが。
　②more　siginicant　of　のところが文法的にわかりません。なぜ形容詞のあとにofがきていいのか
　③　この構文 は there is nothing more 比較級　than　名詞　と同じだと思うのですが
　　　　あっていますか。


　お願いいたします。よい訳があれば教えていただきたいのですが。

その小さな進歩ほど、...に似ておらず、顕著な状況は少ない。

パーツごとに分けて訳すと

There are few circumstances among those which make up the present condition of human knowledge, ...
人類の知識の現状を構成する諸事情のなかには、…であるような事情は少ない。

unlike what might have been expected
予想されていただろうものとは似ていない

significant of the backward state
遅れた状態を顕著に表す
(significant of ...は「…を意味する、…を表す」のような意味になります）

in which speculation on the most important subjects still lingers,
（backward stateと言うのがどのようなものかと言うと）その状態においては、最重要課題についての（根拠のない）臆測がはびこっている（ようなbackward stateなのだ）

than the little progress which has been made in the decision of the controversy respecting the criterion of right and wrong.
善悪の基準に関する論争の裁定においてなされた小さな進歩より

あと、カンマは無くても良いのですが、ここまで一文が長いと、意味の上での区切りをはっきりわかるようにしてやらないと、読む方は文章の構造を把握するのが難しいので、親切で入れてくれているものです。
