Index hospitalization とは？

医学論文を訳しているのですが、"index ICU admission"の"index"の意味がどうしてもわかりません。
辞書にも載っておらず、インターネットで検索してもわかりやすい説明が見つからないので、恐らく、関係者でないとわからない単語だと思います。
医療関係者の皆様、お力を貸してください。宜しくお願いします。

原文は以下のとおりです：
Index hospitalization was defined as the whole acute care hospital stay during which the index ICU stay occurred. If a patient had two or more hospitalizations satisfying inclusion criteria, the first hospitalization was considered as the index hospitalization. Age, sex, simplified acute physiology score (SAPS) 2, duration of mechanical ventilation, length of stay in the ICU and overall hospital length of stay were collected for each index hospitalization.（フランス人が英語で書いた論文です）

また、似たような文献に以下のような表現がありました：
The first ICU admission of 2012 was used as the index admission. We defined the post-ICU period as the 12 months after initial discharge. We defined the pre-ICU period as 13 months to 1 month before the index ICU admission to exclude deterioration leading to ICU admission.（ネイティブが書いた英文です）

index admission：初回入院

index ICU admission：ICUへの初回入院

gooに質問を投稿した後も日本語、英語の文献を調べてみたのですが、未だにindexの意味がよくわかりません。
日本語の文献では「index」を「インデックス」とカタカナに置き換えてありました。
「最初の入院を指標（基準）にしてデータを比較する」ようですので、「初回入院（指標となる入院）」という意味かもしれません。

・index の直訳(翻訳)としては、次のような意味が考えられます｡
　索引 　index, indices
　指数 　index, exponent, index number
　指標 　index
　見出し heading, index, caption, subtitle
　表題 　title, index
　ガイド index, guidance
　案内　 index, information
　総目録 index

・index の同義語としては、次のような語句が考えられます｡
　guide、hint、indication、lead、sign、signal、mark、evidence
　symptom、suggestion ..... etc.

｢ index ICU admission 」という語句から察すると..｢ICU室 入室ガイド｣
のような感じでは ないでしょうか^^ ...???
