干支を英語で説明する時どんな文にすればいいでしょうか？

こんにちは。
私はこの夏二週間オーストラリアにホームステイしまして、その際お世話になったホストファミリーに年賀状を送りたいと思っています。
クリスマスカードでもいいかなと思いましたが、折角なので日本式に年賀状を送ろうと思いました。
年賀状をそのまま送るのではなく、手紙と一緒に封筒に入れようと思っています。
来年は戌年なので我が家の愛犬の写真の年賀状を作ろうと思っているのですが（親バカなので/笑）あちらにしてはどうして犬なの？と思われますよね。というかただの親バカにしか見えませんよね（笑）
手紙で干支のことを説明しようと思っているのですが、どう説明したらいいのか解りません。
やたらと詳しくなくていいので、ざっとこんなものだと説明できるような英文を教えてもらえないでしょうか。

オーストラリアではどうか私は知りませんが、アメリカでは干支は Chinese Zodiac としてよく知られています。

Year of the Dog. と書くだけで分かってくれると思います。説明するのであれば、2006 is the year of the dog in Chinese Zodiac. とすればいいと思います。

干支って中国から渡来したものですね。

私は英語で中国語を学習していましたが、意外にこういうところでも役に立ちますね。干支は英語でChinese zodiacと言います。以下はその教材に書かれていた部分です。

The Ten Heavenly Stems are 甲,乙,丙,丁,戊,己,庚,辛,壬,and 癸 in that order 甲 beeing the first.
The Ten Heavenly Stems also combine in pairs,each pair corresponding to each of the five
elements used in Chinese medicine,viz.wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Thus 甲 and 乙 are associated with 木‘wood’ 丙 and 丁 with 火‘fire' and so on.

In addition to the Ten Heavenly Stems, there are also the Twelve Earthly Branches, each of which is associated with a different animal which occurs in 12 year cycles. Each of us is born in the lunar year of a particular animal. 1950 was the Year of the Tiger, therefore everyone born in
1950, 1962, 1974, and 1986 is a tiger. 1951 was the Year of the Rabbit so all those born in 1951,
1963, 1975, and 1987 are rabbits. Of course each animal Year is said to possess certain characteristics and in the old days this played role in deciding whether or not you were a suiatable bride or bridegroom for somebody. Tiger woman were thought of sa being particularly difficult to handle! The order is as follows:

子 rat, 丑 ox, 寅 tiger, 卯 rabbit, 辰 dragon, 巳 snake, 午 horse, 未 ram, 申 monkey, 酉 cockerel, 戌 dog, 亥 pig

(NB The Chinese traditionally used the Ten Heavrnly Stems and the Twelve Earthly Branches in a sequential order of two-character combinations to to denote different years, monthes and days.)

英文中の漢字には中国語の発音がローマ字で併記されていましたが、ここでは日本語の読み方を併記されるといいかと思います。

確かこんな感じだと思います。

「十二支」の英語での言い方
the twelve zodiac signs（in Chinese astrology）
　"Chinese astrology" は「中国の占星術」。
簡単に "animal signs" と言ってもＯＫ。
　　
Each year has a symbolic animal.
「それぞれの年に、（12種の）動物の名がついています。」

The cycle is completed every twelfth year.
「干支は12年で一回りします。」

The order is : rat, bull, tiger, rabbit, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, boar.
「順番は、子、丑、寅、卯、辰、巳、午、未、申、酉、戌、亥となります。」

This is the year of the ○○ (in Chinese astorology) . 「今年は○○年です。」

The Oriental Zodiac are said to have originated in China during t

he Yin Dynasty (around 1600 B.C. - 1000 B.C.) . They began to express dates through a system of characters used as symbols. The system was later used to indicated not only years, but also months, days, time, and compass directions. And animals were also assigned to each of the 12 Branches. 12 Branches also came to be used in fortune telling which defines the lucky days and etc. Moreover, thus gave rise to various superstitions.
