They loved the lamentable works of Ares and deeds of violence; they ate no bread, but were hard of heart like adamant, fearful men.
Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms which grew from their shoulders on their strong limbs.
Their armour was of bronze, and their houses of bronze, and of bronze were their implements: there was no black iron.
These were destroyed by their own hands and passed to the dank house of chill Hades, and left no name: terrible though they were, black Death seized them, and they left the bright light of the sun.

「振る舞い」が考えられるが、辞書にない。

　　　　＜断固とした、恐ろしい人間のように、心の冷酷さがある＞としました。
(3)from their shoulders on their strong limbs について
　　このonは「彼らの手足の上にくっついた」意味で、「支える」としました。
(4)Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms. について
この文は（of）を挿入して、Great was their Ａ and B (of) the armsと
考え、Greatなのはarmsではなく、Ａであり、B of the armsとしました。
(3)their houses of bronzeについて
　　この文は(was)の省略と思われ、their houses (was) of bronze と
　　挿入しました。

(1)　ここは直訳で「アーレスの仕事」でいいと思います。

　　アーレスは戦の神ですから、つまり戦争のことでしょう。
　　 lamentable とついているのは、著者が戦争というものをあまりよいものではないと
　　　否定的に考えているからでしょう。

(2)　adamant は形容詞ではなく「ダイヤモンド」という意味の名詞だと思います。
　　「ダイヤモンドのように硬い心を持つ、恐ろしい人々であった」

(3)　それでいいような気がします。

(4)　Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms. は倒置の対句ですね。
　　 unconquerable と the arms の間に省略されているのは of ではなくbe動詞（were）
　　だと思います。
　　「彼らの力は偉大で、その腕は征服できるものではなかった」

(3)　それでいいと思います。

(4)　(3)と同じ質問に見えますが…？

(5)　それでいいと思います。

という文があります。
前半はwereの省略で、後半は倒置と考えて、
　　their houses were of btonze, and their implements were of bronzeとなるようです。
　　be動詞＋ofの用法が良くわかりません。
　　　　この用法は辞書で分かりませんでした。
　　意味は分かりますから、著者の超越的表現と考えて良いでしょうか。
(2)他にご指摘いただいた倒置文
　Great was their strength and unconquerable the arms
があって、これは、A and B were greatと読めて、
　かつ、unconquarable the armsは　
　　　　the unconquerable armsと
　　読めるでしょうか。
　　　　これは倒置でも有りますが、’強調の前出し’
　　　　（こんな言葉を使ってはいけないかもしれない）
　　と理解しました。
