文字通りの「～に顔を与える」から比喩的に用いているのでしょうね。

内容的には「（無実）を具現化する」か「（無実）を目の当たりに経験させる，体感させる」

... get firsthand to experience people ...
の部分はどう考えてもおかしいですね。
get firsthand experience
ここまでは確実にこうあるべきです。

get firsthand experience to people ...
と逆という可能性が一つ考えられます。

調べてみると　No1さんが仰るように中国語の”面子を重んじる”のような意味を"give face"と英訳をしていたようですね。

それから派生してgive her faceやgive a faceとして使われているようです。
意味は添付辞書のように
1. to honor
2. フェラチオをする
3．立ち向かう

解りやすい用例として
give a face to justice.
文中に
“I lend my face for justice !”
と置き換えてもよいとしている。
たぶん、”顔を立てる”と言う様な意味となり

文脈を考えると１の方が（私には）しっくりきます。

▼３．tour に参加した人は、投獄されている人が誤って起訴されていることを知る
