The Subaru Telescope is a large telescope located at the national observatory atop the 4,204m (= about13873 feet) high Mt. Mauna Kea. Mauna Kea, higher than Mt. Fuji, has a number of large telescopes of eleven countries around the world, including the United States, the U.K., and Canada, and is called "the world's closest spot to the space." Subaru's main mirror is 8.3m (=about 27.4 feet) in diameter, and it is the largest reflecting telescope in the world. The original project name during the construction stage of the national observatory was Japan National Large Telescope, or JNLT. In 1991, when the construction started, the common name "Subaru" was chosen from public entries.

原文にはありませんので　national observatory と小文字にして置きましたが、場所がハワイですから、国立が、米国のものなら　US National Observatory、日本のものなら Japanese National Observatory　と国籍を明記すると誤解が無いと思います。
