進行形について

ある県の高校入試に、The shrine is standing in the sea. という英文がありましたが、The shrine
stands in the sea.　でなければならないのではありませんか。どなたか教えてください。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　元英語教師。

確かに高校入試で使う英文としては感心しません。

しかし、The shrine is standing in the sea. が非文かというとそうも言えません。
ちょっと長くなりますが、ある文法書から引用します。

The class of 'stance' or 'position' verbs, the most frequently occurring members of which are _stand_, _lie_, and _sit_, falls at the boundary between states and activities. When they are used or fixed or (relatively) permanent positions, these verbs are construed as denoting states and normally occur in the non-progressive; when they apply to temporary positions, for example with human or animate subjects, they tend to be construed rather as activities and to favour the progressive:

[20] i. The church _stands_ at the top of the hill. The village _lay_ beside the gorge.
ii. He _is standing_ near the entrance. They _were lying_ on the beach.

Particularly in narrative, however, the progressive is found for permanent positions, as in _We reached the knoll and the peak was standing majestically above the glacier_: the limited duration feature reflects the narrator's experienceof the situation, rather than the objective state itself.

Google.books などで検索すると、
The First Baptist Church is standing in the distance with the Crescent to the left.
The rock on which the church is standing was left mostly intact...
The school is standing among big old pine trees...
In 1882 a school was standing on the site of the original meetinghouse, south of the last one.


繰り返しますが、高校入試の英文としては、私もアウトだと思います。
しかし、必ずしも非文法的とは言えない。
おそらく、入試のレベルのことに頓着しない、ネイティブ・スピーカーがチェックしたのではないかと邪推します。

ものが立っている場合は進行形にならない、

と昔から英文法で必ず習ってきたことです。

実際はただものというのでなく、傘のようなものや
本棚など動かせるものなら進行形にできます。
しかし、建物など動きようのないものは進行形になりません。

shrine は建造物なので普通は進行形にならないと思います。
しかし、擬人法的であったり、羽目によっては可となるかもしれません。
ただ日本語感覚で立っている、stand は動作動作だから
というつもりであれば褒められたものではありませんが。

日本語だと、2000年も立ち続け「ている」みたいな？
