動作主が主節と同じになるように書き換えれば独立分詞構文ではなくなりますけど：They had no place to return to, having lost their house and most possessions.

分詞構文を使わないということでしたら、
They had no place to return to because/since their house and most possessions had been taken away from them.

Because節は従位節ですけど、ここでは主節で言っていることより前に起きたことを明瞭に表すために大過去（過去完了形）の必要がありますね。
ちなみに、聞き手がすでに理由を知っている場合は because より since のほうがふさわしいです。

あるいは after を使うことも考えられます。これなら順番が分かるので大過去にする必要はなくなり、シンプルな方が分かりやすくなります。（それでも主観的に大過去にする例も見られます。）
