as の使い方を教えてください。

The contents of the report for the second quarter were pretty much the same as those for the previous one.

上の文で as の訳と品詞を教えていただけますでしょうか。よろしくお願いしたします。

訳は

「第2四半期の報告書の中身は前のものとほとんど同じだった。」
で簡単なんですが、品詞といわれてもあまり文法を勉強してないもので自信がありません。
前置詞なのかなあ。

as those for the previous one were

の were の省略と考えれば関係代名詞ですし，あえてそう考えなければ前置詞となります。

とらえ方次第ですが，この品詞を覚えることにどういう意味があるのか，よろしければ教えてください。

通常の"same as ～"(～と同じ）ということで前置詞になるかと思います。

The contents of the report for the second quarter
と、
those for the previous one (=The contents of the report for the first quarter)
は "pretty much the same"（大変似かよっている）
ということです。
