『新・基本英文700選；駿台文庫(2002/01) 』の [83] [102] [263] には、「試験の結果」として、
the result of the examination と the results of the examination が載っています。これらはどう違うのでしょうか？
また、「試験の結果」を、特に文脈の無い日本文において英語に直す場合（短文の英作文ということです）、上記2つのうち、どちらがより一般的に使用されているのでしょうか。よろしくお願いします。

ご質問１：
＜the result of the examination と the results of the examination が載っています。これらはどう違うのでしょうか？＞

１．単数result：

「成り行き」「成果」「結末」という意味では、単数扱いになります。

「試験の結果は合格だった」などでは、「結末」「成果」という意味ですから、単数扱いになります。

２．複数results：

「成績」という意味では、複数扱いになります。

「試験は好成績だった」などは、good resultsと複数形で使われます。

３．使い分け：

The results of the research are being examined.
「その調査結果は、現在審議中だ」
＊調査した結果出た、複数の結果報告をさします。

The result of the research turned to be fact.
「その調査結果は、事実と判明した」
＊調査による「結末」としての結果なので、単数になります。


ご質問２：

やはり文脈によります。どちらでも文法的に間違いありませんが、resultと単数が無難だと思われます。

遅ればせながら辞書を引いてみました。私の知識は、
単語として・・・　result ＝ 結果
熟語として・・・　“as a result”　“result in”　“result from”
だけでした。勉強になりました。この単語自体が自分にとってとても身近になったように感じられます。こういう風に感じられたのは生まれて初めてのような気がします（大げさですが）。皆様ありがとうございました。またよろしくお願いします。

こんにちは。

一般論で言えば…

試験の結果が
　「一つの点数」
　「一つの合格不合格」
の場合は、result で良いと思います。

試験の結果として、
　大変勉強になったなどの成果が上がった、
　合格して自分の運命が様々に変わった、
　試験が複数あり複数の点数が出た、
　模擬試験でいくつかの大学に対する合格率が示された、
　自分の得意不得意が分析されて一覧表になっていた、
など複数の結果や成果がある場合には、results です。

なお、辞書には、複数形になるものは「成果」「好結果」とあります。
また、試験や競技などでの「成績」も**通例**複数形とされています。

どちらでも大丈夫だと思います。
この場合、迷ったら単数にするのが無難と思いますよ。

ありがとうございました。1つの試験において複数の結果が出る場合があるのですね（科目別の得点など）。よくわかりました。得点などが出ると、それは「科目別結果」というよりも「科目別成績」という日本語になるということですね。例えば、入学試験において、合否結果は“result”で、得点開示は“results”という使い分けになるのでしょうか。ありがとうございました。またよろしくお願いいたします。

どちらが一般的というよりも、その結果が複数でるものであれば、複数と考えて大丈夫です。

その文が試験結果（調査や検査のための試験）なのか学校の試験なのかわかりませんが、複数の試験結果が出る（あるいは求められる）ケースはどちらにもありますよね。

例えば環境調査の試験で、水質、空気、なにかの濃度、など複数結果がでる場合。
あるいは資格試験で、複数の科目でどれも基準をクリアすることを求められる場合は、結果も複数出ます。
どちらも一般的です。

単純に、片方は結果の要素が複数あるとうことです。
これだけからはうかがい知れません。文脈によって
複数にすべき必然性があるはずです。

ことですから、通常は単数でしょう。しかし、上でも
言ったように複数にすべき理由が文脈からあれば複数に
するというオプションがあるわけです。
