John was pleased to see that Elvis kept the TV on all the time with the sound off.That was what he did too! John said to one of Elvis's friends: "Tell Elvis that if it hadn't been for him, I'd be nothing."

The John Lennon Story からなんですが、"Tell Elvis that if it hadn't been for him, I'd be nothing."の意味が良く分かりません。教えてください。

if it were not for A　の変形じゃないですか。
