「a large amount of 何々」といえば、その量は１つ。

例えば「何々が536トンある」という感じ。
「large amounts of 何々」といえば、その量は複数。例えば「何々A種が467トンと、何々B種が659トン」「昨日の何々が847キロと、今日の何々が573キロ」「引き出しにある何々が78個と、戸棚にある何々が85個」という感じです。
