In short,,,

Fossil fuels are made from organic compounds such as dead animals and/or dead plants.

Organic compounds on earth starts at the Carbon fixation by photosynthesis by plants. Plants take in water and carbon dioxide, and generates organic compounds such as sugar, starch, fiber and etc.. Animals basically cannot create organic compound by themselves. Their source of organic compounds are either plants or other animals.

Fossil fuels are formed by natural processes such as anaerobic decomposition of buried dead organisms under a high pressure condition for a long period of time.

When those fuels are oxidized, it releases energy in forms of heat and light, and carbon compounds are decomposed and goes back to CO₂ and H₂Ｏ． So, you can say that fossil fuels are energy from the sun in forms of carbon fixation.
