Are there any cheap ways to travel to kyoto?

I'm tokyo now, and I want to visit kyoto in a few days. But the shinkansen here is so expensive...Can you introduce me some cheaper ways to travel to kyoto?

Bus is cheaper.

I found one in English.

Nightliner(bus) can be one of them.Cheap and you can save time as it runs in the night usually.
