push againstの意味

テキストに載っていた、以下の文について教えてください。

You're pushing against the table.

これはどういう意味でしょうか？
push against については「～を押す」という意味だと書いてある辞書もありましたが、

You're pushing the table.
と何が違うのでしょうか？

本来押して動かす物を押すときは against は不要です。

push the door とか。
ただ、動かすのに抵抗があり、それを押しのけて、というような場合、against を付加することになります。
