スラング swell について

今はもう死語にもなっていると聞くswell
スラングとしてはgreatとかwonderfulの意味合いを持って
使用されていたそうですが、なぜswellがその意味で使用されたのか
わかる方いませんか？他にもそういう英語はたくさんあるとは思いますが、
元々の意味とは違うので気になりました。

名詞の swell からの派生語だそうです。
