We are looking forward to Mike coming home.みたいな文のときにMikeのところを代名詞で書くときは、We are all looking forward to him coming home.でよかったですか？his でしたか？どういうときにどっちを使うのか忘れてしまっし、手元に文法書などないので、どなたか説明できる方いらっしゃったらよろしくお願いします。

「彼の仕事は映画を作ることです。」がHis working is making a picture.は実際にはあり得ないような気がしますがどうでしょうか？

前置詞 to の目的語ですから、目的格の him を用い動名詞 coming の実質的主語とさせることも出来ますが、現実に使われるのは、his coming 彼の到来 の方が多いように思います。

The ESL book I'm using says 2, but I remember learning that gerunds should be used with possessive pronouns.
What about "prevented him from coming"? Would that be correct.
Is British English different from American English on this point?

I think the difference may be the tenses.
1) implies his coming into the country and being prevented by immigration in the past or future,
whereas, 2) implies immigration prevented him from coming into the country in the present or future.
Or maybe, vice versa...crap

Subtle difference, but maybe it depends on the context.

ネイティヴにすれば、所有格と目的格それぞれによって、ある種時制の相違を感じるそうですが、
肝心なことは文脈次第であり、どちらでも可能だと明言しています。

結論から言いますとどちらもOK。

ただし昔は"look|looking forward to his coming"が正しいとされていました。

あるアメリカ人のブログを読んでいたら I always looked forward to him coming into the office.という英文が出て来た。この英文で思い出したことなのだが、昔は、というよりも文法的には、これはhim comingではなくhis comingと言ったり書いたりしたものだ。なぜなら、look forward to しているのは（＝楽しみにしているのは）意味的には「彼の来室を」(his coming into the office)ということであって、「彼を」(him)と言っているのではないからだ。だが、語法は時代と共には変化するから、それに伴って多くのひと達はhim comingに違和感を抱かなくなった。英語であると日本語であるとを問わず、およそ言語用法は時代と共に変化するということをよく示す一例だ。

ネットでの用例数を比較すると"his coming"の方が圧倒的に多い:
　"look|looking forward to his coming"　　約 1,460,000 件
　"look|looking forward to him coming" 　　約 192,000 件

> "look|looking forward to his coming"
　この表現は現在は実際には使われてないと言い切る日本人の方もいますので、国や地域によって異なるものと思われます。

受験でこの問題が出たら、"his coming"を選択しておく方が無難ということになるでしょう。

あたくしが調べた限りでは"prevent"の場合は次の三通りの表現が可能であり、いずれも意味の違いはないと解説されています:

You may choose any one of three constructions with prevent:
①　prevent him from coming
②　prevent him coming
➂　prevent his coming
