タイトルの英文は、"A is 3 times as large as B."(Aの大きさはBの3倍である)と同義として使われることが多いのですが、厳密に言うと３倍ではなくて４倍になるということで、とくに理数系の英語ネイティブには評判が良くないようです。
つまり"X times larger than"という表現は避け、"X times as large as"などの形で表現する方が良いということですね。

気にしていなかったけど、言葉通りに取ると確かにそういうことになる。
言っている側がどういうつもりで言っているのかは不明ですけどね。

たしかに、[A is 3 times larger than B. ]　と言うことはありますが、その場合に、「より大きい」という意味がまずあって、その次に、その程度は「３倍だ」という意味合いでしょう。決して「（明確な）４倍」という意味ではありません。大きさの程度を３倍と言っているだけです。
タイトルの数式で、両辺が等値とする「＝」にはなりません。
おっしゃるように、「文科系」の表現でしょう。
