どちらが正しいですか？

「もとの場所に戻す」の英訳を調べると
put it back where it was とput it back to where it was
の二種類を見ます。　toがあるパターンとないパターンです。　どちらが正しいですか？

"put it back where it was" vs. "put it back to where it was"

どちらも正しい。違いは前者のwhereは接続詞として使い、後者は代名詞として使っている。

句動詞"put back"は代名詞や名詞をputとbackに入れ換えることができる。

どちらも正しい。

とはいえ、put it back の定義を見ると、
To return something to it's original place.
to return to its former place
to put something in the place where it was before it was moved

以上のように「元の場所に戻す」なので、
to where や where は不必要です。
Can you put the book back when you’ve finished with it?

ただし、具体的な場所の場合は示してある例文もあります。
"please put the clean dishes back in the cabinet
when you have washed them"
Remember to put the vacuum cleaner back in the closet after you've used it.

普通に考えたら to は不要なのですが、

つけてもまちがいではありません。

to the place where ... が元なのですが、
省略するときに to が残ることもある、
と考えればよいのではないでしょうか。

私なら to なしで使いますね（多分多くの方がそうでしょう）。
