①　female: 学術上の用語。

人間、動物（メス）、植物（めしべ、female bamboo）のいずれにも使われる。時には機械類にも例えて使われる（female screw)。人間の女性に使うのは軽蔑的とされる。

②　woman: 人間のみ。成人の女性。会話ではむしろ lady がよく使われる。ただし、先生や医師の場合は、woman teacher、woman doctor　がよい。

牝馬（ひんば＝メスの馬）を、英語で female horse と言うようですが（他の言い方があるかもしれません）、woman horse とは言いません（多分）。

このことが、female と woman の違いのヒントになりませんか。
