The first time I saw him he was standing by the edge of the lake, looking out to sea, and from act I avoided the piece of planking over the stream, which meant passing close to him, and crossed to the other side of the lake by beach instead.

『私が初めて彼を見かけた時、彼は湖の端に立ち海を眺めていた。

そして彼に気を使って彼の近くを通る水路にかかる木板の橋を避け、代わりに海岸を通って湖の反対側に渡った』

from act では意味が通りませんから from tact として訳しました。
