文の構造

(質問)We want to ask you about Never Let Me Go, which has a science fiction aspect. It takes place in a sort of alternative version of our world. Where did that come from?

(作家)　Well, Never Let Me Go, I think it was published in 2005. I started to write it, I think, about 2001. Now the date is very important because I would say, for a lot of my literary life, up to that point, I was under the impression that science fiction was a kind of a genre I shouldn’t go near. I didn’t consciously examine that assumption. I think it was just something that I had imbibed, being a writer of my generation. 　I think it was not something that was studied at universities unless you think of something like 1984 by George Orwell as dystopian, and therefore approaching sci-fi, but it wasn't a respected genre.

最後の文のapproaching sci-fiがよく分からないで困ってます。

手前の部分はthink of A as B の構文だと思います。
その後にtherefore approaching sci-fiと来ていますが、
どのようは構造につながっているのでしょうか？

会話なので、推敲を重ねた文章ではなく、省略もあるようです。

話している時に言葉を飲み込むことはあります。

例えば、「therefore (I was) approaching sci-fi (science fiction) , but (I think) it wasn't a respected genre.」とか。意味は分かりますよね。

ご自分で補うしかないでしょうね。
