telling you the truth - to be true - honestly 辺りは聞いた事があるけれど、if で始める一節は聞いた事はない。well,ifという繋がり故だろうか。well と言いつつ、即 if で半否定する様な形はネイティヴには違和感があるのではないでしょうか。如何にも断言を嫌う日本では違和感なさそうですけど。

はい、間違いです。

if I told you the truth,
は「もし、私が正直に答えたとしたら」という意味ですので、結果がそのあとに続いていないと、意味が分からなくなります。

If I told you the truth, you would get upset.
などのように。
