なぜでしょうか？

「a」の意味と使い方から理解すれば簡単だと思います。

「a」は「とある〜」という意味で、聞き手にとって何かは特定できないけど、何か1つを指している加算名詞の冠詞です(不定冠詞)。
ちなみに特定できて1つを指している場合は「the」を使います(定冠詞)。

「a」も「the」も1つを指しているんだから複数形のsは付かないでしょ。

複数形の「-s」は「どの〜」と訳せば理解できると思います。
