stand back とstand down の本質的違いは何ですか？

stand down は身体の動静というより、現在の立場、地位、態度をやめる、みたいなニュアンスですかね。sit down ならすぐわかるけど、stand down となると・・・
英語はだから難しい。

本質的に、

back は前後という水平方向、down は上下という垂直方向の違いと言えます。

stand back は道端やバスなどの乗り降りで「譲る」意味で使います。また、バスに乗ると、運転手さんが床につけた線より後ろに立ってくださいという意味で使います。日常的に比較的よく使います。

stand down は階段なら言えますけど、それ以外で物理的に使えることはあまりないと思います。でも、抽象的な意味でちょうど日本語の「降板する」と同じ意味に使われますね。

英語が母国語の環境にいらっしゃったようにお見受けします。stand down は身体の動きにはあまり使わんのかあ。ネイティブは即座に違いがわかるんだろうなあ。

stand back and stand by とは言えるけど、stand down and stand byと言うのは変なのかもしれませんね。
