villageとtownとcityについて

一般的に、villageは「村」、townは「町」、cityは「市」と訳されますね。
日本語では特に「村」と「町」については地方自治体の単位で使うこともあれば、そうでない時もあります。それで、これらは あくまで日本語での使い分けであって、きれいに英語と対応するとは思えません。
そこで質問です。英語でのvillage、town、cityの明確な定義を教えてください。

こんにちは。

英英辞典にある、上記単語の定義です。

village :
rural community:a group of houses and other buildings in a rural area, smaller than a town

Town :
large area of buildings:a densely populated area with many buildings, larger than a village and smaller than a city

City :
very large urban area: an urban area where a large number of people live and work

その他にいろいろ意味はありますが、ご質問にある内容だと、これらの意味が適格かと思います。

と言う事で日本語の訳と英語の単語ときれいに対応してはいません。　ひとつの理由として州の法的意味合いと一般的意味合いとに違いがあると言うことも日本語と対応するには複雑すぎるわけですね。

これでいかがでしょうか。　分かりにくい点がありましたら、補足質問してください。

日本語の村という言葉にいくつか定義があるように、

これらの言葉にもいくつかの定義があります。
人口で表した場合
hamlet-village-town-city
といった順になっているようです。　数にはっきりとしたきまりはありません。

自治体という意味では、
米国ではcityが最小単位となります。　
ですので人口が数十人のcityもあったかと思います。
他の国については良く知りません。
