I am ashamed of myself when I pretended to be asleep then, not giving the seat to the old lady.
** not giving（←現在分詞で分詞構文）= instead of giving（←動名詞）
I am ashamed of myself pretending to be asleep then instead of giving the seat to the old lady.
** pretending は myself を修飾する現在分詞。

(3)日本は他のどの社会よりも急速に高齢化しつつあります。2018年までには、4人にひとりの日本人が65歳以上になるでしょう。
Japan is more rapidly aging than any other country. By 2018 one Japanese out of four will be sixty-five years old or more.
** any other + 単数名詞
** one Japanese out of four＝４人にひとり = one out of four Japanese
four を every four にしてもよい。
** more than sixty-five は、厳密にいえば「６５を越える」、正確には sixty-five or more。ここではどちらでもいい。
