It was not until ～ that ...

It was not until the teacher told them the answer that the students understood what the question really meant.
先生から答えを聞いて初めて、生徒たちはその質問の本当の意味を知った。
というお決まりの文がありますが、いつも not が入っているように思います。It was until ～ that ...というのはあるのでしょうか？　あれば、文を教えてください。

not until が「〜してはじめて」という意味の熟語のようになっていますので、until 単独で似たような使い方はされないと思います。

〜まで〜しないという not ... until を強調構文にすると
It was not until the teacher ... that ...
のように否定が not until ... となるのが英語では自然です。

否定でない〜するまで〜したというのであれば
It was until ... となりますが、
〜まで〜しない
と否定があるなら、その否定は基本的に it is not until となって強調構文を作ります。

It was until ～ that ...は意味が違ってきますが別に決まり文句ではないので使ってもかまいません。

意味は大体下記になります。
先生が答えを出すまで理解していた。（その後わからなくなった？）まっ　この文だと変な構文になりますね。
It was not until ～ that ...
先生が答えを出すまでは理解しなかった。

こんな感じですかね
