直訳ではなく意訳になりますが、

sticks to himselfは1人でいるのが好きだとか、自分ばかりにかまけるということだと思います。

He has only a nodding acquaintance with the neighborsは、彼には会釈する隣人しかいない（つまり友達がいない）という意味だと思います。
