I was happy to hear from him that he passed the exam.

「彼から試験に合格したと聞いて、わたしはうれしかった。」

I was happy that he passed the exam.
「わたしは、彼が試験に合格して、うれしかった。」

I was happy to him passing the exam.
英文として体裁が整っていません。

I was happy to hear him passing the exam.
「わたしは、彼が試験に合格しつつある、と聞いてうれしかった。」
意味的におかしな文です。

I was happy to see him winning the race.
「わたしは、彼がレースに勝ちつつあるのを見て、うれしかった。」
ならいいです。

彼が合格したことを彼から直接に聞いてうれしかったと言いたいのですか。

それとも、彼が合格したことを彼から聞いたときに、彼に「直接聞けて嬉しい！」という意味でしょうか。
上ならば、I was very happy (pleased) to hear that he had passed the exam directly from him.
下ならば、Thank you for telling me you passed the exam. I am very glad (happy)to hear that directly from you.
