We didn't get the bill yet.のdidn'tについて

私たちはまだ伝票をもらっていない。We didn't get the bill yet.

参考書にこういう一文があったのですが、現在形でWe didn't get～　にしてしまいました。
このあたりの感覚が今一つピンとこないのですが、現在形だと意味が変わってきてしまうのでしょうか。

A blog from Cambridge Dictionaryには以下のような記載があります。

We use yet in negative sentences to talk about things that have not happened up to the present time or the time you are talking about. With yet, Brits are most likely to use the present perfect, while Americans often use the past simple:

I haven't read the document yet. (UK)
I didn't read the document yet. (US)

イギリス英語ではyetを完了形で使うのが一般的であるのに対して、米語では単純過去でもyetを使います。

WEBLIO英和辞典見た限りだと、

”not yet“の例文は
「現在形」か「現在完了形」しか
見当たらないですね。
