Question

He says a planet needs to have two things to sustain life. First, it must allow complex biochemistry to develop. For this to occur, the temperature on the planet has to fall within a certain range. Too far from its star and the surface may be too cold to support the necessary; too close and it may be too hot. 

ここのToo far from...の文構造が見えません。andが結んでいるものは、its star and the surfaceなのか、そうするとSが見えなくなってしまいます。
また、too close and の文もよくわかりません。
どなたかご教示ください。

前文から Too far の前には (A planet is) が省略されていると見なします。そして、このような文での and は結果を示します。例えば The sun went down and we went back home. (日が沈むと私達は家に帰った）というような文の and と同じです。後ろの too close の文も同じ構造です。

『 星（この場合は太陽）からあまりに遠いと生命を維持するには衛星表面は寒過ぎ、あまりに近いと暑過ぎる』

個人的には分詞構文みたいなものとおもえばいいのかなと思います。

Being too far from its star, the surface may be too cold to support the necessary.
まず独立したような感じで形容詞句が来た場合は、それ以外の部分の文の主語のことを述べていると思えばいいのだと思います。andが使われているのでちょっと不思議ですが、分詞構文では接続詞が補われるということもある（普通は分詞の前）のでまあこんな事があってもいいのかもと思ってます。

"Too far" の前に省かれている文章を強いてつけたすなら以下のような感じになると思います。

Place the planet too far from its star, and the surface may be too cold
　仮に惑星を恒星が遠すぎるところにあるとする。そうすると表面が寒すぎるかもしれない
Place the planet too close to its start, and it may be too hot
　仮に惑星が恒星に近すぎるところにあるとする。そうすると表面が熱すぎるかもしれない

英文に単語としてなくても、含まれている内容とすればこんな感じです。

のようなやつ。
あれの応用編と思えば良いです。

恒星から遠すぎると、表面は必要なものを支援するには冷たくなりすぎる。

近すぎると暑くなりすぎる。

Beが省略された形と思えば良いです。
