make it possibleが間違いなのですが、なぜでしょうか？

make O C で「O を C にする」という意味で，C には形容詞や名詞がきます。

make O possible なら「O を可能にする」です。
make the invention possible なら「その発明を可能にする」

そして，O が長くなる，たとえば the vivid expression of emotions「感情のいきいきとした表現」くらいになると，
make possible the vivid expression of emotions とSVCOという語順になります。

一方，O が不定詞句 to invent this「これを発明すること」になると，
make to invent this possible だとつながりがわかりにくい。
かといって make possible to invent this としても不定詞の用い方があいまいなので， いわゆる形式目的語を用いて
make it possible to invent this のようにします。

今回のように，形式目的語 it がある場合は不定詞が後にあり， the vivid expression of emotions のような長い名詞の場合は it を用いず， make possible the vivid expression of emotions とすることになります。

TOEFL の問題を具体的に知りませんが、直すとすれば

-----The invention of fresh metaphor today continues to permit the vivid expression of emotions.
が正解ではないでしょうか。the vivid expression of emotions を目的語とするような他動詞を探すと permit (あるいは enable) あたりが適当かと。
