(1) あまりいい問題だと思えないシリーズでしたが、これはなかなか面白い。

it is not until ... that は問題なく書けているようです。

あと、I realized の後に、the cities were crowded「都市が人でいっぱい」という普通の語順に対して
crowded が前に出るためには how crowded とする必要があります。

(2) はたいそうな割に単純な誤り。

最後のところで、it is A and not B that ～
という強調構文「～なのは、A だよ、B じゃなく」

and があるとはいえ、matter の主語は一方であるべきなので
matters とすべきということでしょう。
