It is said that in fact ,the cat pretends to be asleep but doesn't intend to hunt them because that cat knows there's more to saving their lives than hunting them.
What this story truly means is it stands for his sincere wish for piece, and the then Japanese people living in the postwar ,who also wished and sympathized his dream of the world without tragedies　have handed down the importance of eternal peace of minds from generations to generations until today as a peaceful scene is described in the woodcut,which still reminds us so much of the significance of human lives.

まず、蛇足ですが、東照宮は家康により建てられたものではなく。

3代将軍家光が建立したものです。
家康を祭っているんで、家康の死後の話です。
