would→過去によく起こったことを語る場合に使われます。

それが現在も行われているかいないかは関係ありません。

used to→過去に存在したもの、繰り返し起こった事、しかし、「現在は見られない」ものを指すときに使われます。

いわゆる”過去の習慣”を表すと習うものですが、違いを挙げれば、

a) would (do): 過去の習慣的行為・動作に限る。
b) used to (do): 過去の習慣的行為・動作に限らず状態や状況に関しても使われる。
従って、動作動詞との組み合わせは、どっちもありですが、状態動詞の場合は、
used to ~ と組み合わせることになります。
I used to go / would go skiing every winter when I was young.
<go> なので、どっちも可。
しかし、以下のような場合は、 used to ~のみです。
I used to <have> a lot of friends before.
There used to <be> a movie theater at the corner of the street.
付け加えれば、この二つは過去の習慣ということで良いのでしょうが、
スキーに行く習慣があった人が、”蔵王には十回は行ったものだ”などと
語るのを英語にするとして、十回も行ったというのは当然習慣的行為だ
からと考えて、used to~ や would ~ を使うのは避けられることを頭の
すみに留めておかれると良いでしょう。これは過去の事実を表すと考えら
れ、単純な過去形で表現されます。
