　ガンジーの伝記からなんですが、最初, to steal gold from his brotherは、"彼の兄弟から金を盗んだ"と思ったのですが、それでは意味が後の文章とつながらないような気がします。このfromは、"原因"と理解して、"彼の兄弟のために金を盗んだ"としていいのでしょうか?

回答ありがとうございます。内容がそれぞれちょっと異なるようですが、ガンジーは、彼の兄弟から金を盗んで、その金で彼の兄弟の借金を返した、という事でしょうか。そんな悪いことのような気がしないのですが。最後の文では、兄と二人で兄の腕輪を切ったとなり、もはや盗みですらないような気がします。

伝記の文終から解釈すれば 原因と理解した方がスムーズだと思いますよ。
