関係代名詞whichの使い方に混乱してきました教えてください！

to show a strange world of their own
invention

of their own inventionの言い換えが
which they have made up themselves
になるという英文の問題があったのですが、

これだと、

"彼ら自身で作り上げてきた世界"が本来の訳ですが、

"彼らが彼ら自身を創り上げてきた世界"という風に捉えることもできてしまうのではないかと思ったのですが、どうなのでしょうか？
教えてください。

which they (S) have made up (V) themselves (O) ではありません。

which が浮いてくるでしょう。

which(O) they (S) have made up (V) themselves (M) です。

この themselves は by themselves という意味です。

「world which they have made up themselves」だと

"彼らが彼ら自身を創り上げてきた世界"という風に捉えることもできてしまうのではないかというご質問でしょうか。

だとしたら、答は「できません」です。なぜから「which」だけでつながっているからです。

「which」でつながっているので、
「made up」したものは「world」だということになり、
「made up」したものが「themselves」だということにはなりません。

仮にこれが
「(a strange) world where they have made up themselves」ならば
"彼らが彼ら自身を創り上げてきた世界"という解釈も可能は可能です。
