英語についてです。before long で、”まもなく, やがて” という意味があると思います。な

英語についてです。before long で、”まもなく, やがて” という意味があると思います。なぜその解釈になるのか教えて下さい。(before longの語源? をお聞きしたいです。)

個人的には2通りの解釈があると勝手に考えていて、（下に写真があります）

①
longという時間の塊を一つのものだと捉えて 、その前にあたる時間帯がbefore long。

②
longを”長い時間” と捉えるのは①と同じですが、longの終着点に着目し、その終着点の前にあたるのがbefore long。

ちなみに、longは「期間」と捉えるのが一般的ですし、時間の塊と捉える①の方が正しいのかな…と個人的に思ってます。

before long の解釈,語源として どちらが正しいのでしょうか？
勿論これはただ私の勝手な意見なので、他に正しい解釈があればよろしくお願いします。

①　下記LONGMAN辞書によると、before long = in a short amount of time と解説されています。

問題はこの “in” の解釈です。

②　"in" には、a:during, b:at the end of の２つの意味があります。下記WEBSTER辞書の例文から見ると、"I'll be there in a minute." の "in" の意味が近いようなので、"b : at the end of (a period of time)",すなわち、あなたのおっしゃる①が正しいのではないでしょうか。

私は勝手に「長くなる前」と解釈していたので、どっちも当てはまります。
