この2文の違いを教えてください。
live in とlive on はどう違うのですか。

個人的には "live in" はおかしく感じます。

"east side" は東側なので側面（立体ではない）と言う概念です。側面の概念を持つ性質の場合基本的に in ではなく on を使います。

例えば "the city" は立体の概念なので "They live in the city" になりますし逆に "They live on the city" だと変です。

なのでご質問の意図がよくわかりませんが違いと言えば live on が正しく live in だと当てはまらないことだと思います。

前者は市の東に隣接する所に、後者は市内の東に、だと思います。

ただ、sideのない形に馴染みがあるのでちょっと自信がありません。
live on、live in と考えるのではなく、on the 方角 of 〜、in the 方角 of 〜、という副詞句で考える方が良いと思います。

"hey live on the east side of the city. "とは言わないようですね。

on の意味は、「〜の上に、接して」、と言うものです。人間が住むのは市の中であって、市の上ではない、ということです。

"live on" は、「存在しつづける、生計の糧にする、主食とする」という意味です。
