sit and rest on the benches in the shade と言っても良いのでしょうが、書く人の気持ちとして sitが先にあ って、それが何のためかを考えたら restのためなんだろう、という思考順序があったのでしょう。

　きちんと思考して、無駄のない文章を書くより、思いついた順に書き留めるほうが親しみは持てるよう思います。

just ~ shade です。
ただ木陰のベンチに座ったり休んだり。
と言う意味です。
