文構造をうまく解説できるかどうかわかりませんが、まずはだいたいの和訳をつけます。

(1) ... over the years I've made several young friends,
（時と共に、私には若い友人が数人できた。）

(2) partly with selfish calculation
（これには、自分勝手な計算もある。）

(3) -- in case I live long, I won't find myself friendless, the friends of my age having died off.
（私が長生きした場合、同じ年ごろの友人がみな死んでしまって、友だちが一人もいなくなるという状態にならずに済むというものだ。）

(1) と (2) の文構造は単純ですね。(3) は、その前の selfish calculation と同格でしょう。selfish calculation というものがどういうものなのかを説明しているのだと思います。
