日本人の宗教観を英語で説明したいのですが、

バングラディッシュとフィリピンの方と宗教について話す機会がありました。日本人である私はあんまり宗教の話題をしたことがなかったので上手く説明出来ませんでした。
○日本人はあまり信仰が深くありません。
○一応仏教徒である人が多いように思いますが、普段の生活では全く忘れて生活している人もたくさんいます。
というような事を言いたかったのですが、何か上手に説明する英語を教えてください。

It is difficult for me to explain the religion of the Japanese. But I will try to explain.
As you know, most of the European people and the American people have their religion. And their religion is mainly Christianity.
In Saudi Arabia, or in Africa, many people believe in Allah.
And in Philippines, many people believe in Christ.
And in Bangladesh, some people believe in Allah, and the other people believe in Hinduism.
Comparing with them, the Japanese seem to have no religion. Of course, some Japanese believe in Buddhism, and some believe in Shintoism, or some even believe in Christianity. But it is also true that most Japanese seem not to have deep religious feelings, lives, and customs. Most Japanese seem to have forgot their religious feelings in their daily life.
I think, however, Japanese do have their own unique religious feelings. We Japanese have syncretic religious feelings, and they do not seem for many foreign people to be the deep religious feelings.
It is not strange that one Japanese prays to Buddha and at the same time prays to Shinto gods. This does not mean lack of religion in the Japanese. This is the typical form of Japanese's religion. It is often difficult for Japanese themselves to say which god they believe in, or which spirit, or holy being, they believe in. But most Japanese believe in something religious entity which is, however, difficult to name correctly. And you should know that this is the style and existing form of the Japanese religion.

それは、わたしの英語が間違っているか、非常に下手だということです。意味不明のことを書いているのではないかと思います。自分の英文を訳すのも変ですが、訳を書きます。

本当に、こんな意味になっているのかどうか、確信はありません。わたしには、こう読めます。「こう読める」というのは、訳してみて、言葉がたりないと、感じてしまったからです。追加を書きました。

「結局、日本人は、宗教を、概念や論理や教義で捉えるのではなく、宗教的感情で感受するので、言葉で日本人の宗教の説明をするのは、困難なのです。しかし、日本人は、心の深い次元で、宗教の信仰心を持っており、決して、無神論者などではないのです。」

After all, the Japanese do not only grasp the religion through the concepts, logics or doctrines, but also receive it through their religious feelings, and therefore, it is difficult to explain the Japanese's religion by language. Japanese, however, have the heart of the faith of religion in their deep dimension of the hearts, and they do NEVER be atheists and so on.

　英語のことじゃなくて申し訳ないんですが・・・。

　日本人は信仰が深くないなんて、言わないほうが良いのではないかと思ってしまいました。それはおそらく「こころ」や「魂」が日本人には無い、という意味に相手が受け取る可能性があるからです。高度経済成長期の頃の日本人は「エコノミック・アニマル」と呼ばれていたわけでしょう。「無宗教」だなんて言ってしまったお陰で、どうりで「アニマル」なわけだと思われたら、あなた以外の日本人は彼らからどう思われる事でしょう。

　まあこれは、取り越し苦労に終わる事を臨みますけれど、くれぐれもせっかくここまでこしらえてきたあなたに対する信頼を、彼らから取り去ってしまわないようにしていただきたいです。
