My parents were raised dirt-poor. They popped out baby after baby even though they couldn't afford to feed or properly house us. My folks had numerous opportunities to improve our lot in life and passed them all over.

lot in life は決まり文句で「生活の状態」、特に「苦しい生活」を意味します。

lot = situation, circumstance, conditions...状況、状態

それらの機会を生かすことなく、すべて無かった事のように無視した
